Underwriters decide. The AI has done the reading.

  1. 30%

of working time is left for actual underwriting

Property and casualty underwriters spend on average only 30 percent of their time on actual underwriting. The rest is searching, keying in, chasing and sales support.

Who does what.

What the AI takes on

  • Reads applications, medical reports and questionnaires
  • Compares with health answers and guidelines
  • Shows deviations with their source
  • Summarises the risk with a suggestion

What your team decides

  • Decides on acceptance, loading and exclusions
  • Clarifies questions with broker and doctor
  • Maintains the underwriting guidelines
  • Oversees the AI and checks its suggestions

Who it fits.

A good fit if

  • Your underwriters review many applications with thick files
  • Medical reports, questionnaires or business documents come with them regularly
  • Your underwriting guidelines are written down
  • Brokers are waiting for a quick answer

Less of a fit if

  • Most applications are accepted by rules, without documents
  • Your acceptance rules are not written down, they live in the heads of individual underwriters
  • Few applications come with documents

Frequent questions

Common questions about it.

The questions that almost always come up about this use case.

Does the AI decide on acceptance?

No. It reads, compares and suggests. Acceptance, loading, exclusion and decline are decided by underwriters, and every decision stays documented with its sources.

What does the EU AI Act require here?

AI for risk assessment and pricing in life and health insurance, including disability cover, is high-risk under Annex III. From 2 December 2027 this brings obligations such as risk management, data quality, logging and human oversight, and for insurers as deployers a fundamental rights impact assessment. Commercial and property risks are not covered by this. This is an orientation, not legal advice. The EU AI Act check helps with a first step.

What happens to health data?

It is held in German data centres or in your own environment, is not used to train third-party models and is processed only for the application it was submitted with. Access stays with those who have it today.
